ROUNDTABLE TO ADRESS HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS IN OXLEY

Oxley MP Mr Milton Dick and Labor’s Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Senator Doug Cameron will host a Oxley Community Housing and Homelessness Roundtable at the Salvation Army in Goodna today.

This important gathering of key housing and homelessness support organisations will discuss the challenges facing the sector along with a Q&A session with both representatives.

“This community forum today gives an opportunity for housing and homelessness organisations to have their say and for myself and Senator Cameron the chance to listen to the most important needs of the sector,” said Mr Dick.

“Every night in Australia 1 in 200 people are homeless including around 700 people in our community alone.

“This is a clear indicator that more needs to be done to support people in Oxley struggling with housing.

“I’ll be continuing to work closely with our local housing and homelessness organisations to ensure they are receiving the best support available,” said Mr Dick.

Senator Cameron slammed the Liberal National Government for cutting funding to homelessness services when homelessness is rising.

“The Liberals have cut $130 million from homelessness services since they came to government. That funding was being used to help build shelters for women and children fleeing family violence. That is outrageous when service providers report that they have to turn away up to a third of people that seek help.

“The government has its priorities completely wrong. Cutting $130 million from homelessness services while pushing a $50 billion tax cut for foreign-owned businesses and the big banks just makes no sense,” said Senator Cameron.
