I was recently very disappointed to hear the announcement by Suncorp Bank to continue closing local branches throughout our community.
Upon hearing the news of the latest closure my office was inundated with calls from residents who were rightfully angry and frustrated by the decision from Suncorp to close the local branch.
In response to this I was joined by a large crowd of local residents outside the local Suncorp Bank branch to voice our dismay at this decision.
Despite Suncorp announcing earlier this year a profit of almost half a billion dollars ($452 million) and its CEO reported to earning close to $10 million dollars per year, the bank is continuing to close local branches.
It was clear to see from residents at the protest that this is the wrong decision by Suncorp who are choosing to prioritise profits before people.
Joining me at the protest was renowned local resident Mrs Iris Moir who said that the branch was always busy and many of the bank’s customers were elderly, had carers or were disabled, and they would face hardship using their accounts without access to a branch at Inala.
So it was to my surprise when I read in Suncorp’s most recent annual report about an increased focus on elevating the needs of customers to deliver strong growth for the company.
The decision to close the local branch clearly does not stack up to Suncorp’s supposed focus on the needs of customers.
We’ve heard the horror stories from the banking royal commission about Suncorp and the big banks, so it’s time they cleaned up their act and started listening to their loyal customers.
